Durability Performance of Geopolymer Concrete: A Review

Publication Year: 2022

Abstract:

Oligomers form covalently bonded geopolymer networks to make geopolymer concrete. Compared to OPC concrete, its production uses less thermal energy and has a lower carbon footprint. It only needs an alkaline activator to catalyse its aluminosilicate sources like metakaolin and fly ash to produce geopolymer binder. Current research focusses on geopolymer concrete's heat and chemical resistance due to its eco-friendly technology and practical use. This review article should critically assess recent geopolymer concrete durability research. The review found that geopolymer concrete can be strengthened with micro-silica and polypropylene fibres. The review found that geopolymer concrete had high compressive strength at an optimal elevated temperature, low to medium chloride ion penetrability, and high acid and abrasion resistance. Geopolymer concrete could replace OPC concrete in construction.
